How is a Hardened Armored Touch Screen Made?
A micro-thin sheet of borosilicate glass is laminated to the ITO polyester top sheet used in the typical construction of resistive touch sensors. This process produces a flexible glass membrane that is scratch-resistant, waterproof, and impervious to chemicals, fire, and stylus use. The resulting touch sensor is ideally suited to Military, Industrial, Mobile, Public Kiosk, and Medical applications. Configurations are available for 4, 5, and 8-wire sensors from 5″ to 24.0″.

Applications such as the battlefield, public kiosks that are prone to vandalism, systems deployed into heavy engineering or mining environments, general ruggedized equipment, etc.

To meet the rigorous demands of industrial and outdoor applications, AbraxSys, in collaboration with its touch partner, has developed a process for laminating various backplane substrates to Hardened Armored Touch Screen sensors. This process provides exceptional durability, accuracy, and performance in harsh environments, as outlined below:
- Safety and Durability: The screen features a 3mm thick, true safety-laminated pure glass front, optically bonded with an Anti-Reflective Field overlay. Additionally, the screen is constructed with thermally strengthened glass substrate and UV protection, offering enhanced resilience in outdoor conditions.
- Advanced Surface Treatments: The screen includes an antireflective treatment with a specially formulated ultra-hydrophobic topcoat that eliminates smudging, improves water repellence, and resists dirt, oil, and watermarks. This ensures that the screen remains clear and functional, even in challenging environments.
- Performance and Reliability: The system boasts high accuracy and image stability, unaffected by short-term variances, axis linearity, or drift. It is also contamination-resistant, with the top sheet hermetically sealed using a pressure-sensitive adhesive rated for 30 years, and remains unaffected by harsh cleaning fluids or noxious substances.
- Environmental Resistance: Designed for outdoor environments, the screen is unaffected by dirt, moisture, and rain. Its AR ≤ 0.5% Photopic Reflection is achieved through a vacuum-deposited antireflective optical coating that is highly durable and meets industry standards like SAE AMS-2521 and MIL-C-675.
- Scratch Resistance: The screen comes with a hi-resolution, anti-glare hard coat with a 4H hardness rating, providing exceptional scratch resistance.
- Versatile Activation: The touch screen can be activated using a finger, stylus, gloved hand, or any other pressure-based input method, ensuring flexibility for various applications.
